Clear Window: CNC Acrylic vs Powder Print
Clear window CNC acrylic vs powder print: why SLS and MJF stay hazy, how CNC acrylic gets polished clear, and what to ask DigiForge when you quote.
CNC acrylic vs powder print is an optics question dressed as a process pick. SLS and MJF nylon scatter light. A machined acrylic or polycarbonate pane can polish clear. Those are different products, not two finishes of the same print.
Can SLS or MJF Make a Clear Window, or Do You Need CNC Acrylic?
Powder-bed nylon will not polish to a see-through window. RapidDirect's transparent 3D printing guide says SLS and MJF leave a rough surface in every orientation, so translucent nylon stays hazy. For a window that must pass a transmission or visual check, they point to machined and polished acrylic or PC instead. Applied Science needed optical quality on CNC-turned acrylic lenses and compared polish routes in Optical finish for acrylic. Wet sanding to 2000 grit plus Novus No. 2 beat vapor polish on his coupons.
CNC Acrylic vs Powder Print: What Each Path Delivers
Powder print (SLS / MJF) is strong for housings, ducts, and non-optical covers. Our 3D printing menu is MJF Nylon, glass-filled Nylon, Nylon 11, Full Color, TPU, SLS Nylon / PA12, and SLS PP GB. None of those are clear sheet. Vapor smoothing can darken and seal nylon; it does not turn it into glass. See vapor smoothing nylon prints and support-free pricing drivers for what powder jobs actually buy you.
CNC acrylic / PC is the clear-pane path. Machine the blank, then sand and polish the viewing face. Applied Science's winner was mechanical polish, not a shortcut coating. Acrylic chips easier and polishes clearer; polycarbonate takes impact better and is tougher to bring to optical. DigiForge's published materials list does not name acrylic or polycarbonate, so ask us when you quote if a clear plastic window is available for your size and finish. Do not assume it rides along with Delrin or Nylon 6.
When the whole part is a fit-check prototype, CNC machine or 3D print a functional prototype still applies: print the housing, machine the window, or machine both if optics matter.
What to Put on the Drawing
Name the transparency level (translucent, transparent, optical), which faces are viewing faces, and the inspection method. "Clear" alone has no accept criterion. If powder is only for the body, say so and call the window a separate CNC part. Ask us when you quote for clear plastics and polish; stick to named materials on the materials page for everything else.
