When DMLS Beats CNC for a Metal Part

When DMLS beats CNC for a metal part: internal channels and lattices favor powder-bed metal; tight fits, threads and faces still favor the mill.

When DMLS beats CNC is a geometry question first, not a materials question. Both can make stainless and titanium parts. Only one of them can grow a cooling channel that never sees a tool.

When Does Metal 3D Printing Beat CNC Machining for a Metal Part?

When the geometry needs internal channels, lattices or shapes a cutter cannot reach. If the part is prismatic with accessible faces, tight fits or fine threads, CNC is usually the better first choice.

My Tech Fun asked a related strength question in CNC machining vs metal 3D printing (SLM) - Which is stronger?. The description says the same test objects were CNC machined and metal 3D printed in aluminum and stainless. Chapters cover surface quality, "Advantage of 3D printing," dimensional accuracy, weight, load tests and price. That is a useful frame even when strength is not the only decision.

When DMLS Beats CNC, and When It Does Not

Protolabs' CNC vs DMLS guide puts complex internal features on the DMLS side and "ultra-smooth finishes or tight tolerances" on the CNC side. DMLS builds from powder, layer by layer, so internal passages and organic shapes that would need many setups (or be impossible) become printable. CNC starts from solid stock, so every surface a tool can reach can be held tightly and finished cleanly.

Our 3D printing page lists DMLS metals including Stainless 316L, Stainless 17-4 PH and Titanium Ti6Al4V, with lead time "5-7 business days" and tolerance "±0.3 mm or ±0.3%, whichever is greater." Our CNC side runs "3-, 4- and 5-axis milling and turning in metals and plastics" with "ISO 2768-m as standard, down to ±0.01 mm where the drawing calls for it."

Many real parts use both: print the complex body, then machine sealing faces, bores and threads. Ask us when you quote if a hybrid path makes sense for your model.

How to Choose From the Model

If a standard end mill can reach every feature and the blank is not mostly scrap, start with CNC. If the value is inside the part, start with DMLS and plan post-machining for interfaces. Material names on our Materials page match what you can pick in the quote. For a broader print-vs-machine prototype call, see should you CNC machine or 3D print a functional prototype.
