SLS Polypropylene Parts: What Glass-Filled PP Is For
SLS polypropylene parts make sense when chemicals would bother nylon. What glass-filled PP is good for, how it compares on cost, and what to check first.
Engineers call it "Polywarpaline". That nickname, from an r/AdditiveManufacturing thread, tells you most of what you need to know about printing PP on a filament machine. SLS polypropylene parts are a different story.
Is Polypropylene Practical to Print at Production Scale?
Yes, on a powder machine, if chemical resistance is the reason you want it. One forum user says it usually costs quite a bit more than PA12, and there are fewer grades to choose from.
The thread asked about printing PP at industrial scale. One reply said PP is okay with SLS but not as easy or common as PA12, so it's usually quite a bit more expensive. Another said FDM PP is mostly a bed adhesion fight. That's one user's experience, not a price list.
Where SLS polypropylene parts earn their cost
The main draw is chemistry. Plastics Technology's writeup of an SLS PP powder lists strong resistance to acids, bases and salts, with uses like fluid systems, tanks and parts that touch corrosive fluids. That article covers a different PP powder from ours, so treat it as the family picture, not our material's datasheet. Ask us when you quote for the data on the grade we print.
Our materials page lists one PP: SLS PP GB Glass Filled, for "chemical resistance, stiff printed PP". The glass is the "GB" part. It adds stiffness, which plain PP lacks. That's the only PP grade on the list, so if you need unfilled PP, ask us when you quote.
So a good fit looks like a bracket, fitting or housing that sits in a chemical splash zone and needs to hold its shape. If the part just needs to be tough and cheap, nylon is usually the better buy. The differences between our nylons are in MJF vs SLS for functional parts and MJF PA12 vs SLS PA12-GF.
What to check before you switch
Your exact chemical and temperature. "Chemical resistant" is a range, not a promise, and PP has known weak spots. Check a compatibility chart for the actual fluid.
Whether you need the stiffness. Glass filler makes PP stiffer and less stretchy, and elongation varies a lot between glass-filled grades, so check the datasheet before designing a living hinge.
If you've been fighting PP on a filament printer, FDM nylon vs powder nylon covers a similar gap.
