What a first article actually verifies

A first article inspection means pulling the first completed part off the machine and checking it against the drawing before running the rest of the order: every dimension, every callout, every GD&T requirement that's on the print. It's not a spot check of one or two features - it's the whole print, measured and recorded.

The point isn't to catch a machine that's incapable of holding tolerance. It's to catch the things that are wrong in a way that a capable machine will happily reproduce forever: a fixture offset entered wrong, a wrong revision of the drawing loaded into CAM, a feature programmed to the wrong depth because a dimension was misread. None of those show up as chatter or poor finish. The part looks perfect. It's just wrong, and it'll be wrong on every single piece unless something stops the run to check.

Why low quantity makes this sharper, not softer

On a production run of a thousand parts, an error on part one gets caught in-process sampling and costs you a handful of scrap. On a run of ten, there is no in-process sampling - part one, part five, and part ten are each ten percent of the order. A first article that reveals a problem on part one saves nine parts. Skipping it on the assumption that "it's a small order, we'll just check them all at the end" means finding the same error nine more times before anyone looks.

Low-quantity orders are also disproportionately prototype or first-run parts, which means the print itself is more likely to have an ambiguity or an error that hasn't been shaken out yet by prior runs. A first article is often the first time anyone actually measures the design intent against a real part, and that conversation is worth having on part one, not part ten.

What it costs versus what it saves

A first article adds time before the rest of the order runs. Real time, not free.

On a rush order that feels like the wrong moment to slow down. It's the opposite. Catching a fixture error or a program mistake on the first part is the fast path to an on-time, correct delivery. Discovering it after finishing the order means scrapping material, re-cutting, and very likely missing the lead time you were trying to protect by skipping the check.

The practical takeaway

Treat the first part off the machine as a checkpoint, not a finished good, especially on small orders where there's no volume to absorb an error. The few minutes it takes to measure against the print is cheap insurance on a low-quantity run.
